Bob, there's a lot of nonsense, conjecture and paranoia in that opinion. First off, it's from scientists, not engineers. These scientists have no clue as to how an oil well is designed. I know because I worked five years in the oil field service industry for one of the majors (U.S. land, offshore Gulf of Mexico and offshore Canada - Grand Banks, Nfld).

Most of the reporting on this disaster is laughable as the writers are totally clueless. It doesn't help that the vast majority of North American society is so mathematically and technically challenged. There is some decent discussion out there, but you have to know how to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. Look for pieces written by (or with input from) senior drilling personnel and drilling engineers.

The letter written from a congressional panel and addressed to BP's CEO lays out a plausible, logical sequence of the major decisions that led to the initial blowout. Tomorrow's testimony will be interesting.
