The Swiss played not to lose.

indeed....

and that was it. their "defense" was to destroy any advance from españa by crowding the box and made sure that no spaniard had space to do a damned thing.

the spanish strikers froze... they came out thinking that were already one up.... were nervous, became overconfident to the point that they made a couple of defensive errors... and in one of them, the swiss did what the entire spanish team could not do in spite of their field dominance.... they scored. lucky or not, they TOOK the opportunity and did the ONE thing you need to do to win games.... score a freaking gol.

españa could not figure out what the swiss were doing... and following the definition of insanity.... they kept doing the same thing, over and over, and over again, and again.....

*expecting a different result*

they did have a couple of good advances, and many shots, and with the exception of the one that hit the post, for the most part.... they were way wide....

they could simply NOT get rid of the swiss mark... and whenever they had the ball in the box (many times) they just could not open the swiss defense...

i am not saying they were not trying.... it is just that whatever they did, they could not attract the defense to come out to them and open a viable opportunity for one of the strikers to score....

playing in this fashion is very frustrating and, no by saying this, i am not saying i like the defense, defense, defense ... seeking a counterattack.... (catenaccio) strategy

so how did they play ?

spain like little mice running around in the midfield without being effective and score... what good is that ? lots of triangles and passes and crosses.... blah, blah, blah.... but no scoring.... is this how they expect to win the cup ? *in their dreams*

and the swiss ? like destructive elephants bordering on refrigerators.... but no constructive plays... just destroy, destroy, and destroy... and they had the ability to convert into a gol whenever they had the opportunity... and they almost scored a second one.... hitting the post...

no, i do not prefer this type of game/play....very frustrating....

bottom line.... why do anyone plays ?

TO WIN

how do you win ?

scoring more than the opponent.....

so yes, i like open soccer play without fear... but i need conversion.... (i.e. score a damned gol, and more than the opponent)....

i hope they improve... but cannot say i am not disappointed....

i am beginning to change my view..... and i am afraid the final will be Brasil v Germany..... do not know if that is actually feasible as i deleted the table where i had come up with the initial prediction.....

and yes... this game frustrated the hell out of me....
