A few things I learned (again), being away from the market for a couple months like I was earlier this year when I had no clue what it is doing:
-to concentrate on few things, not to look at 100s of stocks or esoteric commodities markets. And to keep it simple.
I instinctively avoided BP which was touted everywhere as a now "cheap" stock. But since all were so quick to put blame on anadarko and transocean which also sold off but are nowhere that dependent like bp is, they turned out to be the much better deal. I haven´t read much about the legal stuff either (where BP is liable for the spill and noone of the drillers..)
And lastly since I have no fancy instruments available, I bought options, and bonds...the whole time I hardly looked at the market, or at tech stocks, and with one eye sometimes at the currencies.
