Autism is more likely to be diagnosed as such when a family has the financial resources to do so, but is not otherwise a "rich person's disease".

In research studies a urine test can distinguish between autistic and non-autistic children by using nuclear magnetic resonance to examine the by-products of gut bacteria and the body’s metabolic processes.

People with autism have a different and distinctive makeup of bacteria in their gut when compared with non-autistic people.

One of the compounds identified in the urine of autistic children is N-methyl-nicotinamide (NMND), which has also been implicated in Parkinson's disease.
