Former exec gets 5-year term in stock fraud scheme

CAMDEN, N.J.

The former chairman of a Florida-based communications company has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for his role in a multimillion-dollar stock fraud and money laundering scheme.

At sentencing Thursday in federal court in Camden, N.J., Gary L. Brown of Ellenton, Fla., also was ordered to serve three years of supervised release and to forfeit more than $651,000, which will be paid to his victims.

Brown pleaded guilty in January to conspiracy to commit securities fraud, wire fraud and money laundering.

Brown admitted that he and others conspired to artificially inflate the price of stock in Sarasota, Fla.-based Skylynx Communications Inc. and secretly sold their shares into the manipulated market, making millions.
