I know anecdotal evidence probably isn't what you are looking for, but I have worked with the Border Patrol in Douglas AZ in the area to which Elmer is referring. He can probably identify most of the locations in the photos below (including College Peak)

I spent a lot of time in the area and not only are there large areas of open land that are flat out not open to the public because of the danger, the city of Douglas itself is hostile area to anybody that is associated with any form of law enforcement.

While working in the Douglas area I was attacked by rock throwing fence hoppers. And while working on College Peak we ran across some of the violence that happens out in the wilderness. Note the photos of the vultures. They had a good meal courtesy of the Mexican drug runners in the Chiricahua mountains.
