Both the USA and Japan (for that matter England before as well if you go back far enough) were replaced by savvy & hungry countries further down the chain. AFAIK, although there are still hungry countries further down, we are about running out of savvy ones. So perhaps China is near the end of this game, and hence it will be different for them then it was for us or the Japs. Exactly how remains to be seen.
