So it seems 'time' is not a tool but an aspect of reality which we can notice, measure, and incorporate into our understanding. We acquire knowledge of things because time passes and we are able to pass through it and observe the things of existence including the passage of time itself. Time is not material and yet it is real.

Other non-material things are real and essential to knowledge also. 'Logic' is real and like time, the logic of existence is there for us to observe and make sense of, if we choose to. If we don't it doesn't change things, there is still a logical explanation for things whether we access that logical explanation or not. We develop tools to understand the logic of existence and we use our natural reasoning abilities to make sense of the realities of existence, as we utilize our tools. When some thing can be observed and we can make sense of it logically, we conclude that the object of our observation is 'real', the basis for what we label 'reality.'

So here are two things we must use to base our knowledge of existence on, which are not material and which are most definitely real. There are many more but these two require confirmation before expansion of awareness in this direction is possible.
