"Even if humans can someday design life, that will only be more evidence that life is designed."

I doubt that probability but faithful materialists must deny the obvious to cling to such hopes. Life is far more complex than design. Life has design, structure, function, laws of organization and purpose which may parallel physical laws of nature and in many ways be no different than non-living things. Life however has some unique properties bound in law and principle which are non-physical. All living things are endowed naturally with the ability to act and to use energy in purposeful ways. The mechanisms action and energy use are observable and we can even mimic much of it, like we do with machines and electronics, for example. Life force makes it possible for living things to use energy and to act on their own. Life force has no material property but all conscious beings are aware of it. Life force is constant in living things, present in and throughout all living things. Action is an essential property of living, reaction and results are elemental components of living. Conscious awareness so monumentally grand in its simple and non-material existence that we can not even comprehensively account for a single moment of one living being's existence with even a tiny fraction of the information involved. Such is the grandeur of life, you can't create that you can't even make a reference to the possibility of creating life without referencing power beyond anything available as we may know it through first hand experience.

"There isn't anything obviously nonsensical about it."

Yes there is.
