So you're really in favor of high speed rail to engineer our society and economy in a way most people don't want to go.
There are not going to be a lot of choices. We have a trade imbalance
Then tax imports of oil and open up more domestic lands for exploration / development.
Command and control of economies guided by government planners doesn't work - 100+ years of history prove that. Look at NK, Cuba.

Interesting I've started an annual planning process at work recently. But more important, I know history and command and control doesn't work .... didn't work in the USSR, China, NK, Cuba, or anywhere. There have even been real world experiments with nations cut in two - one following a rigid command / control model, the other following a freer market model - E & W Germany, E & W Europe, N & S Korea, Communist China & Taiwan & Hong Kong & Singapore. The evidence is clear.
If and when driving gets too expensive (hey, I thought you liberals wanted us to go to electric cars anyway? not NO cars. now we know.) .... if/when driving gets too expensive then we figure something else out .... no reason we should till then.
Yeah, that's a brilliant strategy. Unfortunately, its not good enough for me. So sorry.
If its not good enough for YOU, reorganize YOUR life to one without cars and let the rest of society run their own affairs.

Now if we paid the high speed rail out of fees or taxes paid by riders .... I'd have no problem.
As evidence for what people want .... consider this article that even in our most liberal state, most people don't even carpool:

People have been saying that my entire adult life and I'm getting close to retirement now. Liberals intend to make it a luxury, that is clear. Actually you don't even want people to have cars to pool. Of course, you guys don't do any of these things yourself .... you just push society to enforce something on everyone that even you won't adopt for yourself on your own.
