No kidding. At Texas A&M, Galveston, they held some oil spill technology schools in the late 1970s. Dunno how long the schools went. Anyway, every technology that was discussed then are the same one discussed now with the possible exception of using a nuclear weapon to seal off the well. That includes containment, stopping the flow, cleanup and remediation. While it is likely that the dispersants are better, and maybe the bacteria to inoculate the slicks are improved, there is nothing new.
