TX-Gov: Tied up

PPP (PDF). 6/19-21. Likely voters. MoE 4.4% (2/4-7 results)

Rick Perry (R) 43 (48)
Bill White (D) 43 (42)

With an approval/disapproval rating of 36/49, Perry is suffering from voter fatigue. The GOP base may love his secessionist rhetoric -- and they still support him 69-14, but moderates are flocking to White by a 62-23 margin.

Taking the governor's race in Texas would help Democrats rhetorically offset losses elsewhere in the post-election narrative battle. What kind of anti-Democratic year gives us a Democratic governor in Texas, of all places?

The fact that the governor's race is in play suggests the dynamics are a bit more complicated than anti-Democratic sentiment.
