Malcolm did fabulously well following The Cheap Investor, but Malcolm's uniquely talented, in my opinion. Bill Matthews does pick some losers and if you only can buy very few of the recommendations, it can work out less well. Malcolm does the short-term trading thing, but Bill Matthews does recommend holding forever, too. The problem is, as far as I can tell, he doesn't say which ones to hold and which ones to fold, till years later. ("If you'd have held this one you'd be a zillionaire" kind of thing.) So that's part of where the unique talent of the follower comes in. There's a lot to be learned from Malcolm in technique and I'm not sure it all can be learned. He's an expert, patient, hunter (literally), and has applied those skills.
