Ted, > If we wait til oil is scarce, our economy will collapse. Other companies see that eventuality and are planning accordingly.

That should have read 'other countries'.

In other words, we're not waiting until oil is scarce.

Look at the popularity of the Toyota Prius, for example. It may not make much economic sense (get yourself a Honda Civic for less), but there are MANY people who want to be prepared for gas going above $4/gallon again.

Its a drop in the bucket. Most countries in Asia, Europe and South America are taxing the hell out of gas and building mass urban transit, fast trains and developing alternative sources of energy.

Brazil reduced their dependency on mported oil by developing an ethanol industry while still a third world nation. France went the way of nuclear power. If we don't find an alternative source of energy and quickly, you can kiss our superpower status good bye.

There is also a growing trend toward living in the city again. Living out in the suburbs isn't as hip as it used to be, especially with commutes lasting longer than an hour in all the major cities.

Its all great but its mostly voluntary. We need to be on a 10 year plan that sets specific, attainable goals. I want to see the taxes on gas go up by a buck over the next 5 years. People need to get how serious the situation is.

Meanwhile there are plenty of companies, especially in Northern California, receiving lots of venture capital toward alternative energy projects.

We'll adapt. No big deal.

I know you don't live your life that way so why should the nation function in that manner?
