Android would really cease to be Android if they stripped it down.

One added point, Google doesn't have to be the one that builds the lite weight Android.

Android is open source so any provider or group of providers can use as much of the source as they want and modify and maintain it.

I am sure hobbyists all over the world are working on this stuff to put Android on their existing hardware.

Before you scoff, that's how Linux started in the first place.

I wonder if BREW should go open source? That doesn't mean make it free, but since the real money is in the apps and service side, it might be beneficial. There will always be a need for low power/performance devices and phones.
