Generally I'm against hate speech and hate crime laws. If someone commits a serious crime against someone, try them for that crime, if it isn't a serious crime (absent the "hate crime"/"hate speech" laws) then they shouldn't face any serious punishment.

If someone murders someone while shouting racial epithets at them the important point is the murder, not the epithets. The murderer might be less sympathetic and might be more likely to be convicted or to face the maximum sentence if convicted, and I'm probably ok with that (at least the latter, the conviction should be based on the facts, if the alleged perp is a racist asshole it doesn't necessarily mean he's a murderer), but it shouldn't be a new crime. The basic crime is murder.

If the murder is done by a group like the KKK, I could see conspiracy, charges and even terrorism charges, so there is some scope for going beyond the simple murder charges, I just don't think it should be based on special crimes based on the emotion of the perp, or the race or other group status of the victim.
