Because he was hand-picked by Obama to implement the new strategy in Afghanistan. Obama could have easily said, "OK that's enough. Let's get out." But he made a campaign promise to focus on Afghanistan. Hence he's taking ownership of this mess.

The press, of course, is praising Obama for "reasserting civilian control" over the military, as if that was ever in jeopardy.

Rolling Stone is probably feeling smug for getting a general dismissed. Cause you know, they are the premier authority on the war on terrorism:
