Koan, I'm always leery of implying mental pathologies for those who disagree with me politically. That said, after long evaluation and careful thought, combined with careful experiments, I've also come to the scientific conclusion that most of these rightwing types are just plain freaking crazy.
As I may have mentioned, I was raised in a military family. My father served in Vietnam and reminded us kids of that Duval character in Apocalypse Now (he even kind of looked like him when he was younger). That said, my dad is an example of a principled conservative. He really thinks things through, weighs the evidence and listens to counter-arguments. So, even though he's not fond of Obama, he is aghast at what the GOP has become. As for Iraq and Afghanistan, he has a term for these wars that I can not repeat on a family website.
Unfortunately, conservatives like my dad are a vanishing breed. They've been replaced with nuts who are unmoored from any principle beside power and the mob. They are truly dangerous people.
What to do? I'm not sure. But I do know for starters that I am sticking with Obama through thick and thin, no matter what his faults. We can't let any of those lunatics anywhere near the White House. |
