IMO, the rest of the world will be able to switch far quicker than the USA.
Only in the USA are cities, in fact basically the entire country, built around the automobile. Cars are more an ingrained status symbol for the general public in the USA than anywhere else.
Excepting certain areas (NYC comes to mind), you cannot live a normal life without a car in the USA.

Public transit is the key to getting away from an oil based economy.
It can be argued that video-conference technology also may help, as it allows more people to work from home. I don't think this one is realistic. Humans are social people. Business needs to happen face-to-face.

Maybe cold fusion is the answer.
Anyone got dilithium?
