I'd feel the same way in their position.

While a few people may visit the site for other content, I know if someone were posting large messages elsewhere that come from here, a lot of people who would've visited because of excerpts don't need to because they got all the content.

That's the business case. Putting the content elsewhere increases the ad revenues of the site on which it got pasted and reduces the ad revenues of the site from which it came.

But beyond that, it's illegal, even with the link, and a copyright owner or, for that matter, any author, is entitled to not have the entirety of their hard work copied where it won't make them any money.

Edit: I've heard back from the copyright owner and he says it's fine to leave that post up, in light of my response to it, and hopes only excerpts will be copied in the future.
