Finally read the Nov. 3 InformationWeek cover story. Again, I'm left with the wonderful impression that NOVL is fighting for its life. Up front, the editor-in-chief points out for the umteenth time that NOVL's installed base is its greatest (if not only) asset. I equate this with walking into downtown Detroit at 3:00am thinking that the $200 in my back pocket is my greatest asset.

NOVL has excellent products, but each enhancement or new product is perceived to be a defensive reaction to MSFT strategy. Yet, when MSFT announces an NT enhancement, it's considered an offensive move in a bold new direction. I read an article on MSFT, there's only perfunctory mention of any competition. I have to repeatedly refer to the title on the NOVL articles to remember who the piece was about. Perception: NOVL-weak, MSFT-strong. If MSFT is truly dictating NOVL's strategy, let's give up now. Otherwise, I'd much rather see NOVL's logo splattered across my TV screen this Sunday than ADM's "supermarket to the world" (case in point for advertising).

Way long on NOVL,

AJ
