As you may guess, Steve, I would not skip raising taxes as a tool to deal with deficits. One shouldn't in this economic environment, of course; but if and when we get back to reasonable patterns of growth, then I would certainly argue for that. As you may also know, I think one of the great tragedies of the past thirty years has been the political culture shift to constantly cut taxes. Much of the present deficit is the result. Not least of the culprits is GWB's big package. But his are far from the first.

I'm not opposed to big government; just would like to have better government.
