John, maybe you're hanging on too much to what is in the assumption that it's the best formula.

It seems to me that one can make a case for the public school system we have as now failing our children. Dropout rates and test scores are the indicators. Teachers now make pretty decent salaries and have excellent benefits, but pupil scores haven't kept up. The school year is shorter than when I taught and the teacher spends less time in class. He/she is out for parent-teacher conferences and for prep days.

The curriculum is hardly any different from when I was in school 50 years ago. The same old tired classics are read. The same useless facts are memorized.

I won't even start in on the union rules that keep unfit teachers in the classroom.

Why do we want to hang on to all of this?

Maybe taxpayer money should go to charter schools because they are producing better results.
