Depends on what those 'unintended consequences' ARE I suppose.

If the relief well injection of mud fails to stop it then using explosives, or else just letting it run until the pressure drops sufficiently to plug it, might be the only two viable remaining options.

But blowing it up certainly would scupper what's left of B.P.'s investment in that well's location --- so you know B.P. probably ain't gonna like the idea! <GGG>

Done correctly (1000 feet or so below the floor of the Gulf, in a seven inch hole with a sub-kiloton "dial-a-yield" "suitcase" nuke) there might not be any detectable residual radiation at all.

(We certainly tested these small devices well enough in Nevada in the 'seventies....)
