required moving millions of people around

I would like to point out something which, as you will see, relates to the essence of our discussion.

There is a big difference between "moving people" and "people moving". The former implies a grand planned action by the Chinese government. The latter - a free capitalistic expansion, with people freely migrating on their own will to where there are opportunities.

I find that it was the latter. If people are not restricted by force from migrating, they may keep coming from poor parts of the country for many years, applying [some] pressure on wages.

I doubt that having to travel an extra hour by plane, or a few extra hours by car or train will stop them.

Btw, you are right, Lee wrote an interesting post, which I appreciated.
