my mid-year review of AMSC

INTRO Here's my semi-annual exercise to see if I remember why I own the stocks I own, and so I can check back and see if their stories have changed. I post in case it helps others too.

American Superconductor
AMSC (market cap $1.20B)
American Superconductor is a company formed around the idea of mass-producing high temperature (relatively speaking) superconducting cables for power transmission. That product has yet to make it to market in quantity, but in the meantime they have developed and are selling power regulation equipment (dVARs), and through a lucky or wise acquisition are apparent leaders in wind turbine design and wind turbine farm infrastructure. The ancillary businesses are generating greater than expected revenues and profits. They are also invested in motor designs based on superconductors and the mega-project that is tying the three main US power grids together (Tres Amigas).

Their ancillary businesses are investments. Their prime business is still speculation. Enough money from either camp makes the distinctions moot.

I think they have a lot of potential because almost all large alternative energy plans involve electricity, and superconductors transmit electricity most efficiently. Whether it is solar, wind, or whatever, they have a chance to benefit from that market. Their cables, which should come on line in appropriate quantities any year now, should do well in re-wiring dense population areas. (I think shielding cables in liquid nitrogen financially precludes long distance transmission.)

Unfortunately, I can't quantitatively estimate the company's value because I don't understand their business well enough. I do know though, that utility infrastructure is multi-billion (or is it in the trillions?) so even small slices of the market represent big numbers.

I'll continue to HOLD. Wish I could buy more. Sorry I had to sell. That's the best lament for a stock because it usually only happens when the stock has performed well.

DISCLOSURE LTBH since 2003 but the first shares were sold a while back.
