Sometimes people clash over material interests without time or opportunity to sort out the whys and wherefores. I'm not sure the case you presented should necessarily be categorized as evil on either party's account. Obviously the settler group or the native group would judge the event differently, which is beside the point.

As an objective witness, I wouldn't label either as more right or more wrong. Either to kill the armed invader, or protect your self from a surprise attack ... both seem to be reasonable actions to me.

“…What we know in the recesses of reason to be evil“

My comments were more directed at the misuse of doctrine, tradition, covenants, authority, ceremony etc as an excuse to do abandon personal autonomy and responsibility for your actions. I don't think all religious people do that or that all humanists or atheists do it but certainly there are brutal and inhumane representatives that could be lifted from both groups. We know it when we see it, even if it takes us a hundred years into the future, and thousands of miles of separation before we are willing to take a look.
