I don't think so. I think the segment was just getting too crowded for Microsoft's taste. I can't blame them for that--it is getting very crowded.

Smartphones will continue to grow rapidly, IMHO. There will of course be a shakeout. But I don't see it happening until sometime in 2011. Tablets will also be growing rapidly with lots of entrants. The market for each will be large enough and geographically diverse enough that there will be room for more than one major vendor of each, although plenty of aspirants will drop out eventually.
