My friend has a small hydro project for his cabin. There is a substantial creek which is impounded and water piped to a generator that runs all the time and charges a big bank of wet cell batteries. The lights, fridge, washer and dryer -- everything run off of it.

You project sounds quite a bit different, but you might consider the battery DC option.
