Thanks for bringing up this book, Brian, as I will buy it this weekend. Actually, I went to B and N last night after seeing your post, and missed the closing of the store by 5 min. It used to stay open later. :(

I like historical fiction and esp. ones that focus on either China or Japan. This winter I read Becoming Madame Mao by Anchee Min and The Concubine's Daughter by Pai Kit Fai. Enjoyed them both very much.

If you haven't read The House At Sugar Beach, I can't rec it enough. One of the most delightful and charming books I've ever read....couldn't put it down. Helene Cooper is a journalist and it is her memoir and gives one the historical background of Liberia.
