I can tell you that my experiences in food service kept me fed for free, although the pay and cachet sucked. It's really embarrassing to bus the table of the girl you lust after in school, letting her father know in advance that you are a loser!

My first job, dishwasher at a pizza parlor, kept me drunk as well! Any pitcher that came my way without ciggy butts in it was MINE! I was 15..

At my local supermarket recently, I inquired about what happens to the items that are past their expiration dates. The lady I was talking to showed me the out of the way, unadvertised location where Kroger put them, at steep discounts, for two days before they expire.

I assumed that when they expire, Kroger would give them to a food bank, the homeless or something. Nope - straight out to the dumpster.

Most food has so much preservatives, it's good for a while after the due date. Then, there's canned goods, potentially immortal..
