"Nobody has defeated Afghanistan in the past 1000 years." Michael Steele. In the 15th Century, Jelal A Din, Prince of Kwarwazim, fled from his father's defeat by Ghengis Khan and in his panic, he conquered Afghanistan very quickly. A Mongol army followed him to the "unconquerable" country and Jelal inflicted a rare and humiliating defeat on them. But that just ticked off Ghengis Khan who invaded with his main army. Jelal restarted his retreat and Ghengis ended up as ruler of Afghanistan and most of the world.

Two centuries later, a man who claimed descent from Ghengis Khan (probably a lie), Timur the Lame, conquered Afghanistan on his way to invade China. He died before he reached China, but Tamerlane is still remembered as a man who took Afghanistan, and many other coutries, with very little trouble.

I like Michael Steele and think he's a hoot. He just needs to have his remarks proofread before he utters them in public.
