Smil is on the money. Energy transition will take generations and globally could take well over a century. Even in the developed world it will be decades before clean energy could possibly out pace growing energy consumption from population and actually begin to reduce fossil fuel demands. Alternate energy will be developed and it is a legitimate need, but it is going to be a very long transition.
