<One difference between 1998 and 2010 is that the market was in a secular bull market in 1998, while it is in a secular bear market today.

While that's true I think there's an unbelievable statistic in there that can't be ignored. The Minimum gain off a mid-term election year bottom is 27% for the S&P and 32% for the Dow. Again that's the minimum in the last 50 years and that includes the 1966-1982 and 2000-present secular bears.

The average is obviously far higher but not one of them was followed by less than a 27% S&P gain.

So the only issue then is where is the bottom of this correction? The correction is currently at 16% off the 1217 high. If it proves correct that we're not in a bear market that will reach 20% off the highs, than we're pretty close to the bottom of this correction and there should be huge gains ahead from these levels.
