I thought of another example of "The Overton Window" in action:

Michael Steele is the Chairman of the Republican Party. The sliding scale defines how well he could be doing. On one end, Steele is a genius and is doing the best job possible in his role. On the other, Steele is a bumbling idiot who should be replaced.

Most people who have an opinion on Steele are somewhere in the middle.

Democrats would LOVE to see Republicans expend all their political energy on an internal debate about whether Steele should stay or go. As long as Republicans are fighting about that they are distracted from the real issues, which is an advantage to the Democrats.

No doubt there are Democrats who are attempting to manipulate the Steele Overton Window among Republicans because by doing so they can advance their own agenda. So every chance they get they try to undermine Steele with their suggestions and behavior so Republicans will be too busy to challenge Democrat ideas.

This is just one example I thought of as I watched the news this morning.

Here's another: we see all kinds of commentary on the gaffes made by Vice President Biden. Republicans love to see Biden with his foot in his mouth, and when he inserts it they make the most of it in order to slide the Overton Window in their direction.
