You're bumming me out, man.

Book I'm reading describes the destruction of Smyrna in 1922 by the Turks. Nasty, nasty stuff. It appears to be human nature that there's always a percentage of people around willing to commit atrocities. No ethnic or religious underpinnings. Part of our DNA, it appears. Book describes how the Western powers just stood off in the bay and let it happen, forcing those who swam out hoping for rescue back into the water.

They're around now. Moral judges and finger waggers in good times, murderers in bad.

God help us all.
