So the government just steps in and gives these people money and all is fixed? If it was just so easy. The economy is much more complicated than people just being out of work. The downturn didn't start with people out of work - it started to decline because it was waaaaay over-leveraged largely because people used their homes as charge cards. Take all that spending away and that is what started the decline. The argument that unemployment insurance encourages joblessness and bad behavior is troubling (makes me sick). Well I'm sorry my thinking makes you sick - but I know for a fact that at least in some cases unemployment insurance encourages bad behavior because I know of people who have abused it. I know of two people personally who had jobs that have gone away for good and neither of them have any intention of looking for new work until their unemployment runs out. They are gaming the system - so don't say it doesn't happen because it does. There is no penalty or fine for what they are doing - they are doing nothing illegal. Morally wrong? perhaps. But they are winning by gaming the system. .........So you want me to continue paying my taxes so they can get even more unemployment than the two years they get now? Well if that is how democrats think, then I'm moving to the other side and that whooshing sound you hear is all the people who think that it is wrong to take from a working man trying to support his family to give to another man(or woman) who turns down work that they feel is beneath them. So you are asking a janitor for instance to subsidize the payment for a government worker? If you want to pay people who do not work and you want to charge it on the credit card - then you have to give it to everybody because it no longer is an insurance plan - it is welfare.
