I don't think the Democrats WANTED unemployment benefits extended. If they had, they'd have been willing to come up with a way to pay for the benefits by cutting something else .... heck, just re-designate some of the porkulus spending bill money that hasn't been spent yet.

If benefits had been extended, more people would be counted in the unemployment stats - if 947,000 people hadn't been dropped from the "workforce" over the last couple months, the unemployment rate would be 10.1%. Do the Democrats want to run for re-election with double digit unemployment? No. They didn't really want unemployment benefits extended, they just wanted to blame Republicans, who aren't in power, for it.
