Yep. Something's stinky here in the US and it's not at all subtle.

In many countries you need a passport just for a hotel room. You sign the register at a hotel and you have to give them your passport and (if required for that country) visa info.

These are countries where I'd be considered quite wealthy (unlike here) and very unlikely to be staying permanently. By rights they should be happy to have me but they still keep close tabs.
