Jobs are always like that in a financial crisis of this
magnitude. Takes a few years to normalize. They are just
trying to keep S. from hitting da fan, or another 7 million
jobs will be lost -ng-

The Japanese managed to keep jobs during lost decade, but
they have a different culture. I actually don't have a clue
how to explain that phenomenon, except that they really
ramped up government spending (and government jobs). Now
they are facing some fiscal problems because of that.

Still, this is a major puzzle, at least to me.
