Soybeans use some nitrogen, it was clover that added nitrogen. Now it comes out of 1,000 gallon tanks.


My mistake. Isn't soy a legume? Anyway, I've seen Ohio farmers rotating between soy and corn. Now they use a plowless method using herbicides, which I do not think is very satisfactory, but must make economic sense given the cost of diesel.

Alder trees have nodules on their roots that are filling with nitrogen fixing bacteria. I've prescribed planting alder a few times because more nitrogen in the soil helps to cut down on root rots, which are caused by fungi.
