We don't really know how many we're talking about -- a substantial portion of the 9-10% unemployed, however.

The important point, though, is that as a matter of public policy it doesn't make sense to provide free money to those who are unemployed. Now, if you want to provide 13 weeks of benefits or even 26 weeks, that might be a time when public policy can take a back seat to compassion for persons in difficult circumstances.

But we cannot continue this approach of funding, long term, persons who are unemployed. AT THE VERY LEAST, these people should have to do SOMETHING for the free money.

We [taxpayers] pay people to do any number of jobs that these unemployed persons could be doing. At least 10-20 hours a week, so that it is SOME hassle for them. Otherwise, the government is simply encouraging unemployment.

Government can't solve all problems.
