Perhaps the reasons for my being less sanguine over this, from an architectural perspective, if not from the standpoint of a wanting user, have to do with price and opportunity. The cost of the wrong choice in this case is humongous; the lost opportunities for future capabilities of my own choosing, and competition in general, are likewise large. Sure, better to have FiOS than to wait for something better that might never arrive in this lifetime, or be stuck in copperland using DSL, but I don't have to like Verizon's (or TW's or Comcast's, etc.) restrictive application policies, TOS and proprietary implementation rules.
