Global warming’s self-parody
July 9th, 2010, 4:09 pm · 50 Comments · posted by Mark Landsbaum

It’s hard to mock global warmists’ obsessive fear-mongering more than their own self-parodies do.

This item just in: “WASHINGTON – As the eastern seaboard continues to endure a record-breaking heat wave, the thought of giving up air conditioning seems about as enticing as switching off the furnace during a bitter cold snap. But a Kansas environmentalist is suggesting just that.

“Americans, says Stan Cox, are overly reliant on air conditioning and, with the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster serving as a grim reminder of the U.S. penchant for oil-guzzling, it’s time to find other ways to beat the heat.”

“I don’t want to suggest air conditioning doesn’t have its benefits — in a heat crisis like this one, clearly air conditioning has proven to have a public health benefit,” said Cox, whose new book, “Losing Our Cool: Uncomfortable Truths About Our Air-Conditioned World (and Finding New Ways to Get Through the Summer),” is raising eyebrows in the U.S. this week.”

Here comes a pip:

“But we are seeing lavish, unnecessary use of it,” Cox said Thursday.

At least the guy admits this much: “It’s not one of those situations where there’s a corporate conspiracy or evil-doing behind it, it’s just one of those technologies that tends to create the need and desire for even more of it. People think they can’t live without it, but they can.”

(Those of you who sympathize with Cox go ahead and go without your A/C this summer and check back with us in October.)

But here’s the real payoff:

“Nine out of 10 new homes in the U.S. are built with central air, Cox says, and Americans use as much electricity to power their air conditioning as the entire continent of Africa uses for everything.”

Are you ready? Here it comes…

“And it’s a vicious circle: the reliance on A.C. is contributing to global warming, Cox says, which in turn creates more of a demand for it.”

Got that? Using your air conditioning is warming the planet, which requires you to use your air conditioning, which… Well, ain’t that a dilly?

You know, of course, what these folks’ solution is. Certainly not to air condition Africa.
