There have been quite a few other projections that this or that previous changes will fix the problems with social security, or at least push the problems back for a long, long time. But things haven't worked out that way.

Partially its because the changes where not big enough, for such huge and growing program. Partially its because the problems are not just a matter of fiscal balance. Covering ever increasing costs with higher taxes doesn't really solve the problem of ever increasing costs. Fiscal balance, even if it really is restored by the proposed changes, is not the only problem. The spending is too large already and in the future will be much too large. No level of tax increase can fix that problem.
