RE: Stalin - It certainly made sense to support the Soviets initially. After the German disaster at Stalingrad winter '42-'43 we could have cut them off. The German tide had crested. Certainly after the great tank battle at Kursk in the summer of '43, Soviet survival was guaranteed. The Allies had a firm footing in Italy by autumn '43. So round up and say we should have cut Stalin off by January 1, 1944.
