"A true democracy would be very difficult to put into place in a country with over 300 million people" With today's technology it would be EASY. It would be LESS difficult than giving all Americans access to ATM's. But, it wouldn't be wise. We elected George W. Bush TWICE! Can you even IMAGINE what Americans would do if they had an initiative process like California's?
