AAPL and GOOG are the strongest innovators in the last decade; finance is run in NY, NC and CA; several healthcare firms dominate their field, not sure where they are all HQ'ed, agricultural and mining machinery is still strong for global markets, Boeing is one of two major plane makers in the world, and so on.

The idea that America doesn't make anything is a myth. I believe we are still the largest manufacturer in the world.

The main selling point for Texas is that the state government will let most outfits get away with just about anything they like down there. As for the rest of the Midwest, I don't think Illinois is in great shape, and it's one of the main anchors. The smaller farm states may be doing OK but they hardly register on anyone's radar except for farm subsidies.

How big a part of the Arkansas economy is WMT now?
