California has the same law as Arizona on their books and didn't even know it! [Penal Code section 834(b)]

The actual story as I understand it is a little complicated. That subsection was part of Prop 187, passed by voters in 1994 (so it can only be eliminated by voters, not the legislature). There was a lawsuit to block it, an injunction was issued, and Gov. Pete Wilson appealed. But the litigation wasn't pursued all the way to completion since Gov. Gray Davis dropped California's defense of the law, so the entire law remains in limbo and is essentially unenforceable.
