BP Pressure Data May Show Well Depletion, Allen Says (Update1)

By Katarzyna Klimasinska

July 16 (Bloomberg) -- Preliminary pressure readings from BP Plc’s oil well in the Gulf of Mexico may indicate the presence of leaks, that the reservoir is being depleted or that the well has integrity, National Incident Commander Thad Allen said today.

The pressure in the well is “slowly” rising from 6,700 pounds per square inch, Allen told reporters today.

The company will continue with the test for at least another six hours, he said.

While pressure below 7,500 pounds may indicate that the well is leaking, the fact that the pressure is rising might suggest well integrity, Allen said.
